The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy DVD

Interesting. Anyone know if this is any good? It doesn't have to be cool, just funny... I didn't even know this was ever a television series, I just thought it was a radio series.

Hollings Howls Will Have to Wait

'Sen. Patrick Leahy says a controversial proposal to embed copy protection in electronics gear will not become law this year.' 'Since Leahy is the powerful chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee, his opposition instantly boosts the difficulty Hollywood studios will encounter in their attempts to enact sweeping copyright legislation.' 'The Vermont Democrat said through a spokesman that he "does not" support the Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act (CBDTPA), which Sen.

Yahoo Resets Marketing Info

A practical note today: For everyone who has an account with Yahoo, the bastards have reset your marketing preferences to "I beg you to deluge me with crap, including by phone and snail mail." I have confirmed that this includes people like me, who only have Yahoo accounts for yahoo groups. Please read the Slashdot story and follow the directions on how to undo this. Of course, none of my readers were stupid enough to give their real address or phone number, right?

The CBDTPA is Immune to Criticism

I don't like to chime in on a topic unless I have something interesting to say; that's part of the reason I don't add many entries to iRights per day. But a couple nights ago, I woke up in the middle of the night, and happened to have a thought about the CBDTPA that I think might be very importent to those fighting it. It's a long thought, though, so I'll link you to The CBDPTA is Immune to (Conventional) Criticism.

Jabber .8

A new release of the Jabber framework for RU and Frontier. (The prefs page will probably work only in RU.) Info in the title link, and the changes page (if you've installed it).

Towards a more .8 Jabber Framework...

I've done the coding for the transition to the new framework architecture for Jabber, and I'm now testing it, trying to run down all the code paths, checking my TODO list, seeing what happens when I disconnect the network. Also got a bit of documentation to sift through and correct, which I'm doing right now. I also want to once again look into the possibility of adding Jabber functionality to xml.

Neighbors on the Net

It's interesting to look at your neighbors on the net when you have your own domain name. Obviously, I have "JERF.ORG", which you think would be kinda isolated, but that's not true. I receive a lot of messages directed to INFO\@IERF.ORG. (All caps deliberate; I get stuff from IERF precisely because j's look like i's.) IERF seems to be a teacher re-certification group; if you have a foriegn country certification for teaching, and would like to translate that into a USA certification, they're the ones you talk to.

Finding Pay Dirt in Scannable Driver's Licenses

'"It's the same information as the front of the license," said Frank Mandelbaum, chairman and chief executive of Intelli- Check, a manufacturer of license-scanning equipment based in Woodbury, N.Y. "If I were to go into a bar and they had a photocopier, they could photocopy the license or they could write it down. They are not giving us any information that violates privacy."' I wish I could take this guy's computer off his desk.

The Wednesday Bomb(let)

Scottish Lass: "Dave, it's supposed to be us girlies that are the teases." Hehe.  [Scripting News] But does that method of figuring it out count? *chuckle* Been looking forward to this for a while, and it's done in style, too.
