The LinkBack program is surviving OK... still got a couple of minor bugs that don't really affect anything. You can join anytime, and it's open to anyone... (just a reminder )

"This Orwellian phobia (who do we turn in next?: 'dangerous' parents, neighbors and sibs?) has been a staple of the most venal political systems in the 20th Century, from Nazism to fascism to Communism."

It's a start anyhow... but I see no sign that the Education Institution (such as could be said to exist) even recognizes there's a problem here.

Maybe some technologically-inclined educators could start considering ways to use technology to loosen the police-state atmosphere up a bit, before college. Perhaps if we didn't shackle the students together at the equally-boring-for-all pace, students would retain enough interest in learning to not necessitate a police state to maintain order with unruly (read: restless, bored, requiring other forms of stimulation) students. Technology can allow more personalized learning rates.

I was in school not that long ago. It is an exceedingly unpleasent place. I didn't even realize how bad it was until I was out.

can anyone seriously doubt that we run schools like police states? And our answer to the troubles is to make the schools MORE like police states? I guess the flower-children of the 60's learned and taught us nothing. I suspect we're going to start seeing rioting at high schools if this goes on much longer.

W.A.V.E., a profit-making program ramping up in the southern U.S. and soon to go national, will use Web sites, toll-free numbers, T-shirts and cash to encourage students to anonymously turn in classmates they consider depressed, dangerous or potentially violent.

After quotes like this,

A question for all of those educational sites that are so-well represented on EditThisPage.com... Consider the Slashdot article about W.A.V.E.. Perhaps the article is a bit sensationalist, but still, there are some valid concerns there.

(I'd recommend you keep an eye on those results, if all goes as planned it will be very useful to show off some of those in a couple of weeks.)
